Okay. So I have fished this creek now for 2 years in search of these bloody chub. I’ve seen them mouth lures, spit them out, spook and shoot off and completely ignore me but for 2 years in this spot I have completely blanked on the chub front.
Until last night that is…….
2 casts 2 fish. First was a lovely little perch.

Then on my second and last cast I saw a small fish shoot out of the water which I thought was something I had spooked but a split second later my rod completely went over and the surface of the water erupted as what I thought at first was a half decent pike hit my lure and shot off all over the place. I’m pretty sure the smaller fish came towards the lure then surfaced trying to escape the bigger fish!
I started to panic as I remembered that I wasn’t really setup to lift anything bigger than a small perch up and over the railings (Please bare in mind I have fished this spot continuously for 2 years now and have never caught anything other than wasps and the occasional small pike which I have climbed down to land).
Once the fished calmed down I could see it was a half decent chub and I was buzzing. I decided to let some line off and hand over hand the fish up to unhook it safely.
Really not bad for a 0.5g jighead and tiny lure at a spot I have never fished at night before.
I was so happy at finally getting one of these chub (from this location) I didn’t even bother fishing anymore. The efforts of all of the previous sessions finally paying off in 2 sweet casts.
I packed up with a smile and headed home.
Mission accomplished.
