I truly hope that deep within every fisherman or woman there is a want to learn and understand everything possible about the nature of these scaly creatures. A driven desire to do right by the fishes and their species and above all else a true pride in caring about the environments we tresspass into to cast a line. I know, I am dreaming and see all too often that there are those who do not deserve to catch fish, but for those of us who have that respect for what hides beneath the surface, we are blessed with an ever growing amount of information readily available about everything we could want to know about fishing.
I have read ‘The Lure of Bass’ cover to cover enough times now that I feel I am starting to really absorb the valuable experience that jumps out from it’s pages.

This detailed ‘how, when, where and most importantly why to’ of bass lure fishing is packed with detailed explanation, instruction and some excellent advice on how to catch European seabass from the shore on a rod, reel and a few lures.

Unless someone can tell me otherwise, it is the first of it’s kind, and it is something that I had searched for for 5 years before suggesting to the auther he should write it.
I had felt that need to learn about these fish and how they behave. I wanted to understand why my 8 hour sessions were not rewarding me with regular catches. I wanted to arm myself with the kind of knowledge that would allow me to know when to fish, where to fish and how to give myself every possible edge of advantage over these stunning beasts.
For all round fishermen I solidly recommend the already legendary text ‘Hooked on bass’. I’m sure Marc Cowling himself will admit to having read this book cover to cover on more than one occasion himself in his earlier years of targetting bass from the shore and so will most bass anglers. I picked up my copy for less than £3 in a charity shop. What a find! Until recently, for me this book was ‘The Bible’ of bass angling.

It’s a cracking book but unfortunately barely scratches the surface of lure fishing for bass which for many of us is the holy grail of british shore fishing. And that is where Marc Cowling has stepped in.
I stumbled across Marcs blog very early on and was an instant fan. I messaged him regularly to support him and congratulate him on his efforts in hope that he would continue to write so I could keep reading. His blog became pretty popular very quickly and everyone (in lure fishing circles) were sharing his content.
His series of posts were quite evidently to me the makings of a very good book and so I wrote to Marc explaining that I had been searching for a book on bass lure fishing to no avail, and that there was a real gap in the market.

Soon after he confided in me that he was indeed working on a book himself but asked me to be discreet about it.
A little over a year after, the book was released and as soon as payday came I bought my copy directly from Marc and was lucky enough that he signed it for me before sending it!

I barely looked at my phone for a week as I devoured the information in the text and marvelled at the photographs and stories told. My understanding of what makes a good bass mark, when to fish and how to fish each type of lure has grown 10 fold arming me with valuable knowledge which I am hoping to utilise to increase my catch rates.

For the casual bass angler who doesn’t have time to put in hundreds of hours of trial and error across a wide range of marks, this book is worth its weight in diamonds. I can guarantee that if you read just one chapter before each session you would do something different and increase your potential to catch fish. If you have time to read the book in depth and re-read as I have, I am confident you may even change your whole approach to lure fishing.
For a start, a whole chapter on locating your own venues to fish from will save you hours and hours of trying all diferent areas which might not hold fish and instead point you into bassy areas.

Short of giving you the co-ordinates of his own bass fishing marks, Marc Cowling couldn’t do a great deal more (outside of his guided sesions) to help you catch a bass yourself on a lure.
Now, both Total Sea Fishing and Sea Angler magazines have put there faith in Marc and regularly post his articles and so do Lure Fishing for Bass’ online tackle store website, so he must be saying something right!
Marc might not be a god of fishing or have the celebrity status of some of our tv heroes but he certainly is a messenger in how to pick bass out of the oceans using lures. Which for me as a lure angler is why ‘The Lure of the Bass’ is the new Bible of bass fishing!
It’s quite simple…..
Buy it, enjoy it, & catch more bass!
